Antique 1850s Ambrotype Union Case Civil War Era 1/6 Plate Not Daguerreotype

Original mid-19th century ambrotype photograph of an unknown young man, circa 1854–1865, housed in its original gutta-percha Union case.

This early photographic process was created on glass using the collodion method, producing a direct positive image. The portrait exhibits the characteristic silvery, mirror-like appearance seen in authentic ambrotypes, especially when viewed at an angle or against a dark background. Sorry about the camera/light reflection but was trying to capture a closeup of the subject.

The image is mounted behind a gilt brass mat and protective glass, with a cloth pad opposite. Case shows age-appropriate wear consistent with over 150 years of history.

Ambrotypes were popular from the mid-1850s to early 1860s and predate paper photographs. Each image is one-of-a-kind and cannot be reproduced.
