Mostly unknown beyond his famous photographs of young rebels and rockers, are the sports photographs Karlheinz Weinberger took from the 1960s onwards. This second book of the Swiss photographer's work introduces a lesser-known, yet truly fascinating, aspect of Weinberger. He worked for various sports newspapers and magazines, covering athletes and competitions in Switzerland and East Germany, among other places. His strong interest in the male physique is documented in bicycle races, wrestling matches, weightlifting events, and more.
3. MEDITERRANEO
Best known for his radical archive capturing queer youth and social misfits, he visited the Mediterranean region several times throughout his life. Some of the photographs taken there are widely known, but most are unpublished. Many were taken in and around Agrigento, the Lipari Islands, Lampedusa, Lecce, and Naples. Weinberger also visited Tangier in 1963 and 1964. However, his interest was not limited to men and their physiques. He also documented traditional ways of life in southern European cities and the countryside, harbors and coasts, often giving these subjects a cinematic texture.
