Today we know that the Sahara Desert was not always a desert. In Tassili n'Ajjer, east of the Hoggar, amazing traces of ancient life, of a large-scale pastoral existence, still remain on the rocks. Among them were "artists," and thanks to them, we have one of the most beautiful sets of paintings and rock carvings known in the world today.
Jean-Dominique Lajoux brought back an excellent photographic record from Tassili after two trips lasting several months in 1960 and 1961. "Merveilles du Tassili n'Ajjer," published by Chêne in 1962, quickly went out of print and was requested to be reprinted.
For this reissue, the author returned to Tassili in 1972 to complete the documentation, especially on the latest periods of cave art, and to establish a balance of knowledge in the field. He was assisted by the interest of the newly established National Park of Algeria and the Tuareg people's deepening knowledge of their own cultural heritage, and the book was published in 1977.
